What is Pre-seed funding?

Pre-seed funding is the first outside money a startup raises, usually from angels, friends and family or small funds, to go from idea or prototype to first proof that customers want it.

Example

A founder with a working prototype and 20 people on a waitlist raises $300,000 from four angels on a SAFE. The money buys 12 to 18 months to find the first paying customers.

Why it matters for early-stage founders

At pre-seed, investors bet mostly on the founder and the problem. Knowing what they look for tells you what to prove first and how much to raise for the milestones that unlock the next round.

The common mistake

Raising before you can explain who your customer is and why they need you now. Without that, every investor conversation turns into a discussion about the idea instead of the evidence.
