What is Beachhead market?

A beachhead market is the small, specific first segment you set out to dominate before expanding. Its customers share the same problem, talk to each other, and can be reached through the same channels.

Example

Instead of "restaurants", a reservation tool starts with independent fine-dining restaurants in one city. Owners know each other, read the same newsletter, and one strong reference brings the next five.

Why it matters for early-stage founders

Winning a small market completely is easier than winning a large market a little. References, word of mouth and a focused message all compound inside one tight segment.

The common mistake

Picking a segment because it is large rather than because you can reach it and win it. A beachhead you cannot reach cheaply is not a beachhead.
