What is Ideal customer profile (ICP)?

An ideal customer profile (ICP) is a specific description of the customer who gets the most value from your product: the one most likely to buy quickly, stay long, and refer others.

Example

"Small businesses" is not an ICP. "B2B SaaS founders with a working product and 3 to 10 paying customers, pre-Series A, selling without a marketing team" is. You could find ten of them on LinkedIn this week, and you know what they are struggling with right now.

Why it matters for early-stage founders

Every later decision depends on it: what you build, what you charge, where you look for customers and what you say to them. Early on you cannot afford to serve everyone. A sharp ICP means every hour and every dollar goes to the people most likely to pay.

The common mistake

Describing demographics instead of a situation. Age, industry and company size say who someone is. An ICP also says what just happened to them that makes them need you now.
