What is North Star metric?

A North Star metric is the single number that best captures the value customers get from your product. When it grows, the business usually grows too.

Example

For a rebooking tool, it could be "cancelled slots refilled per week". It reflects real value for clinics, and more refilled slots lead to retention, referrals and revenue.

Why it matters for early-stage founders

It aligns the team around customer value instead of vanity numbers like page views, and it makes trade-offs easier: does this work move the North Star?

The common mistake

Choosing revenue or sign-ups. Those follow value; they do not measure it, and they can rise while customers get less from the product.
