What is Problem statement?

A problem statement is a short, specific description of who has a problem, what the problem is, when it happens and what it costs them. It keeps the team focused on the customer's pain, not on a solution.

Example

Weak: "Small businesses struggle with finances." Strong: "Solo agency owners lose 5 to 8 hours a month chasing late invoices, and one late client can push them into overdraft."

Why it matters for early-stage founders

Every solution is only as good as the problem it solves. A sharp problem statement makes it obvious what to build, what to leave out and how to explain the value.

The common mistake

Hiding a solution inside the problem ("they need an app to..."). A real problem statement describes the pain without assuming the answer.
