What is Customer discovery?

Customer discovery is the process of talking to potential customers to learn their problems, current behavior and buying triggers before and while you build, so you base decisions on evidence instead of assumptions.

Example

Before writing code, a founder interviews 15 bookkeepers about the last time month-end closing went wrong. Eleven describe the same bottleneck with client receipts, which becomes the focus of the first product.

Why it matters for early-stage founders

It is the cheapest way to avoid building something nobody wants. It also gives you the exact words customers use, which later become your messaging.

The common mistake

Pitching your idea and asking if they like it. People are polite. Ask about past behavior and what they have already tried, not about hypothetical futures.
