What is Positioning statement?

A positioning statement is an internal sentence that defines who your product is for, what category it competes in, what makes it different, and which alternative it beats. It guides decisions. It is not a tagline.

Formula

For [best-fit customers] who [situation or problem], [product] is a [market category] that [key value]. Unlike [primary alternative], [product] [key difference].

Example

For solo B2B founders who launched but cannot find repeatable sales, [product] is a sales playbook tool that turns their best customer conversations into a repeatable process. Unlike hiring a sales consultant, it costs a fraction and works every day.

Why it matters for early-stage founders

It keeps the whole team consistent: what to build, what to say, and who to say it to. Without it, every page and pitch drifts toward a slightly different story.

The common mistake

Writing it for everyone. A statement that excludes no one has made no choices, and it will not help you decide anything.
